Request for Proposals

2009

1. Background: The Foundation for Autism Research & Remediation (FARR) announces a request for proposals for research in the following areas of autism theory, remediation, or assessment:

Cognitive social functioning
Experience sharing in communication
Cognitive and emotional co-regulation
Initiation of joint attention
Development of inter-subjectivity
Cognitive flexibility
Emotional coordination
Strategic cognitive problem solving
Social referencing
Reciprocal conversation in communication
Nonverbal communication
Quality of life

Funded studies will aim to produce clinically relevant results that promise benefits for individual with autism spectrum disorders, their families, and service providers.

2. Evaluation Criteria: FARR will consider proposals on a rolling basis. There is no deadline for submission. Proposals are reviewed and researchers are contacted within two (2) months of the proposals receipt. Review criteria include:

            Significance:
                    The study addresses an important problem or advance scientific knowledge.

            Methodology:
                    The study follows scientifically sound and appropriate research design, methods, concept, and analyses.

            Innovation:
                     The study is original in its aims and/or methodology.

            Investigator:
                     The principle or co-investigators have sufficient training in research methods in general and the methods proposed by the study specifically, to conduct the study.             

            Relevance:
                      The study has clear clinical relevance in improving the quality of life for people with autism spectrum disorders and their families.
 

3. Awards: Grant awards are limited to $20,000 for one year. Continuing funding of projects will be considered and require re-submission of a proposal that includes a section presenting the progress of the study during the previously funded period.

4. Submission Guidelines and Format: To facilitate the review process, proposals must follow the guidelines below. Applications which do not follow these guidelines will be returned.

    1. A brief literature review specific to the proposed research.
    2. Demonstrate that the proposed research group has necessary resources and training to conduct the project.
    3. Description of the proposed research site, including the site’s resources, other funding, constituents, and other studies conducted at the site.
  3. Methods
    1. Objectives and hypotheses
    2. Subjects
      1. Recruitment procedures and characteristics of sample
    3. Measures
    4. Timetable
    5. Budget
    6. Statistical analysis of data
  4. Qualifications of the investigators and collaborators

    Font:                Arial or Times New Roman, 12 pt.
    Spacing:          Double spaced
    Copies:            3 Single sided, stapled copies
    Page limit:       15 pages
